ALOCASIA ‘CALIDORA’
Alocasia odora x Alocasia odora ‘California’
PARENTAGE: Alocasia odora x Alocasia odora ‘California’
SYNONYMS: N/A
HYBRIDIZER: LariAnn Garner (Aroidia Research)
VARIEGATION: N/A
DESCRIPTION: The Alocasia ‘Calidora’ being marketed today is a different selection of the original cross, having more of the characteristics of a vigorous Alocasia odora than the much smaller Alocasia odora ‘California’. This selections was chosen because it grows more compactly and inherited much more of the rounded leaf characteristic of Alocasia odora ‘California’. It also produces abundant offsets and can grow in sun or semi-shade.
This hybridization produced a range of morphologic types, some of which bore no resemblance to either parent. See Alocasia 'Pixie Teardrops' pages for examples of the more bizarre progeny obtained.
INFLORESCENCE: N/A
NOTES:
1. LariAnn Garner of Aroidia Research reported that the name Alocasia × calidora was published in Aroideana, the journal of the International Aroid Society (volume 6, number 3, July 1983), before the hybrid’s release to the trade, and that plants sold as ‘Calodora,’ ‘Caladora,’ or ‘Persian Palm’ are this hybrid.¹
2. Eric, a grower in Orlando, Florida, reported a single Alocasia ‘Calidora’ about 7 feet tall, with about 5 feet of that height an above-ground pseudotrunk formed by the tuber.² The report does not say which selection of the cross the plant was.
