HYBRIDIZER: Wirachai Sukkwan (วีระชัย สุขขวัญ), a Thai hybridizer from Bangkok created Alocasia ‘Gold Magnet’ in 2022
DESCRIPTION: Alocasia ‘Gold Magnet’ is the first hybrid using Alocasia macrorrhizos ‘New Guinea Gold’ genetics, and the presence of its unique gold mutation further confirms it’s not a normal type of chimeral variegation, and is encoded in the plant DNA.
Overall, this hybrid heavily recalls Alocasia micholitziana, in both leaf shape and its velvety texture.
The hybridizer noted that he is also growing other seed lines (currently unnamed) from the same cross that do not carry the gold mutation, and is considering using them in future F2 hybrids.
