AMORPHOPHALLUS 'DIGEST'

PARENTAGE:

Amorphophallus variabilis 'Sluka's Dark Giant' × Amorphophallus titanum

ORIGIN:

Cross made in 2017 in Indonesia by Indra Wirianto, who applied stored pollen of wild-collected Amorphophallus titanum from the Riau forest to a blooming Amorphophallus variabilis 'Sluka's Dark Giant' belonging to a hobby grower; named by Micha Gracianna Devi.

HYBRIDIZER:

Indra Wirianto

DESCRIPTION:

Almost the whole plant is maroon, except for green petioles in the vegetative stage and the yellow female and male zones of the inflorescence.¹ The solitary leaf has a green blade about 100 cm across, made up of acuminate leaflets roughly 20 cm long and 8 cm wide, on a petiole 1.2 m long and 6 cm thick at the base, and the color pattern is white spots on a maroon background.¹ The peduncle is 35-100 cm long and 6 cm thick, the spathe 44 cm long, and the spadix 85 cm long with a 7 cm pistillate zone and a 7 cm staminate zone.¹ The growth habit is similar to that of 'John Tan'.¹

NOTES:

1. The pollination produced 49 healthy and 53 unhealthy seeds, and the fruits were harvested three months after pollination.¹

2. The registry record is still under review, and the registrant reports that a characterization of the cultivar is under review at Aroideana.¹

3. One of the named seedlings of Amorphophallus variabilis × Amorphophallus titanum.² Other named hybrids from the same two species: 'John Tan'. See every recorded cross of these two parents.

STORY:

STORY TITLE: A name built from the initials DGS

The cultivar is a cross of Amorphophallus variabilis 'Sluka's Dark Giant' (DGS) with Amorphophallus titanum, and the registrant formed the name DiGeSt from the initials DGS to keep it easy to say.¹
