AMORPHOPHALLUS ERYTHRORRHACHIS × AMORPHOPHALLUS GIGAS

PARENTAGE:

Amorphophallus erythrorrhachis × Amorphophallus gigas

HYBRIDIZER:

Bill Weaver

DESCRIPTION:

Whether the plant is a true hybrid has still to be investigated.¹ It has never gone dormant since it was sown in 2009, which Claudel thinks may come from the father, Amorphophallus gigas, and so supports a true hybrid.¹

NOTES:

1. Bill Weaver: Amorphophallus erythrorrhachis (ovule) × Amorphophallus gigas (pollen), one seedling surviving (UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, Paul Licht); reported 2009.² Hybrid nature not yet confirmed by Claudel; evergreen since sowing in 2009. Aroid-L 2009-07 msg00018.

STORY:

STORY TITLE: A single survivor from 2009 seed

Bill Weaver made the pollination in 2009, and some of the seed went to Paul Licht, director of the Berkeley Botanical Garden.¹ All the seedlings perished except one, which is the plant pictured, growing under Licht's care.¹ Claudel was eager to see it flower.¹
