ARUM ITALICUM × ARUM MACULATUM

PARENTAGE:

Arum italicum × Arum maculatum

DESCRIPTION:

A natural hybrid between the two most widespread European species, recorded where their ranges meet. In Denmark unusually vigorous plants of this parentage have been reported outcompeting both parents.

NOTES:

1. This is a natural hybrid and the direction of the cross is not recorded. The parents are listed seed-parent-first by the usual convention for a hybrid formula, but which parent bore the seed has not been established.

2. A 2007 post to the Aroid-L mailing list by Peter Boyce lists this cross, recorded from France, as Arum italicum subsp. italicum (also reported as subsp. neglectum) × Arum maculatum, and states that the parents in his list are given pollen parent first.² Read that way, Arum italicum is the pollen parent and Arum maculatum the seed parent, the reverse of the order in which the parents are listed on this page. The post cites no source for the direction, so it remains unestablished.

OVULE PARENT:

Arum italicum

POLLEN PARENT:

Arum maculatum
