PHILODENDRON CORDATUM

PROTOLOGUE: Philodendron cordatum , published in Synopsis Aroidearum Complectens Enumerationem Systematicam Generum et Specierum Huju Ordinis 95 (1856). The protologue is reproduced below.

SYNONYMS:

HETEROTYPIC SYNONYMS: Arum cordatum Vell.; Philodendron apparicioi G.M.Barroso

DISTRIBUTION: SE. & S. Brazil: Brazil South, Brazil Southeast.

DISTRIBUTION NOTE: iNaturalist: Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo.

SPECIES DESCRIPTION:

Translated from protologue: Petiole slender; lamina ovate-oblong, acuminate, sagittate with a deep, covered sinus, the posterior lobes retrorse, semi-ovate-oblong, very obtuse, overlapping one another along their inner margin, with 7 spreading veins.

INFLORESCENCE:

Translated from protologue: Inflorescence subsessile.

ETYMOLOGY:

Although Schott's protologue gives no explicit etymology, the Latin epithet cordatum, "heart-shaped," most likely refers to the cordate outline typical of the leaf blade in this genus.

NOTES:

1. Schott's synopsis cites the name from Kunth's 1841 Enumeratio Plantarum (En. III: 52) but supplies the description transcribed here, which is why the species is credited elsewhere as Philodendron cordatum Kunth ex Schott.
