SCINDAPSUS PICTUS 'EXOTICA'

CULTIVAR DESCRIPTION:

The large-leaved form: thick, heart-shaped green leaves heavily marked with shimmering silver, the solid silver areas feathering into speckling around a green midrib; given a support the leaves grow far larger than those of 'Argyraeus'.¹,² Growers describe the leaves as almost as stiff as cardboard, the majority of each covered in silver, and side by side with other varieties they can be almost double the size; the variegation may cover 60–90 percent of a leaf.⁴,⁵,⁶

VARIEGATED FORMS:

'Mayari', a white-variegated sport accepted by the IAS Aroid Cultivar Registry in 2019, and 'Legacy', a yellow marble-and-splash selection accepted in 2023, are both registered against this plant; 'Tala', submitted to the registry as a backyard mutation of an 'Exotica' specimen by Delos Reyes, Sheila Quezon and Mark Angelo Cacatian, has not been accepted.⁷,⁸,⁹

NOTES:

STATUS - A market name. Not yet accepted by the International Aroid Society. As of September 2026 the IAS Aroid Cultivar Registry holds no record of this name at all - neither accepted nor declined - and there is no plant patent. The name is recorded from nursery and trade sources and is not validly established.

1. Costa Farms, one of its largest growers, is not sure when 'Exotica' first came about.²

2. It is the parent of the patented sport 'SUPHA10', found among plants of the unpatented commercial variety 'Exotica' in a nursery in Chonburi, Thailand, in 1999.³

3. Also sold as 'Trebie' according to OurHouseplants, which notes that its leaves are usually much larger and lighter than those of 'Argyraeus' and that the amount of silver varies from plant to plant.⁵
