AMORPHOPHALLUS BULBIFER 'STEMULATION'

ORIGIN:

Appeared as a seedling in the Plant Delights seedbed in 2004; Juniper Level Botanic Garden's list of introductions names Alan Galloway as the source and gives 2008

CULTIVAR DESCRIPTION:

A selection of Amorphophallus bulbifer that produces multiple stems from one tuber, which eventually separate and form a patch.¹ Plant Delights says each tuber yields up to eight heavily speckled stems about 30 inches tall.¹

NOTES:

1. Juniper Level Botanic Garden's list of introductions names Alan Galloway as the source.² Plant Delights describes the plant as arising in its own seedbed.¹

STORY:

STORY TITLE: A seedling that broke the rules

Plant Delights says the plant popped up in its seedbed in 2004 with an unusual habit for the species: one tuber sends up several stems that later separate. The nursery remarks that the species should not do this, but that its plants never read scientific journals.¹
