AMORPHOPHALLUS KONJAC 'BLACK JACK'

ORIGIN:

Juniper Level Botanic Garden; a selection from the garden's field trials, named by Tony Avent in 2025

CULTIVAR DESCRIPTION:

A selection of Amorphophallus konjac with solid black petioles; the plant that was named had a tuber nearly the size of a basketball when dug.¹ Tony Avent describes the petiole as slightly darker than that of 'Nightstick' and the leaf spread as larger.¹

STORY:

STORY TITLE: A basketball-sized tuber

Garden Curator Doug Ruhren was moving one of the garden's new Amorphophallus konjac selections from the field trials into the garden when he dug a solid black-stemmed form whose tuber was nearly the size of a basketball. A month earlier the same plant had been named 'Black Jack'.¹
