AMORPHOPHALLUS KONJAC 'FLESH GORDON'

ORIGIN:

Plant Delights Nursery/Juniper Level Botanic Garden; Plant Delights describes it as a 2021 introduction of its 1994 seedling

CULTIVAR DESCRIPTION:

A selection of Amorphophallus konjac with an exquisite light pink petiole highlighted with tiny black flecks.¹ It is smaller than typical plants, maturing at about 21 inches tall with a 30-inch spread, and mature corms produce a purple-spathed inflorescence about 3 feet tall.¹

NOTES:

1. An Aroid-L listing of July 2001 already names 'Flesh Gordon' among plants donated by Tony Avent to an IAS auction, with a flesh-colored petiole dotted with tiny black spots, earlier than the 2021 introduction date.²

STORY:

STORY TITLE: A cinematic pun

Plant Delights introduced the cultivar in 2021 from a seedling raised in 1994. The nursery says the name is a pun on a cinematic namesake and expects the plant to earn better reviews than that namesake while being equally phallic.¹
